A new study found that adipocytes (fat cells) can be infected by the coronavirus and become inflamed. This is not a new phenomenon. Viruses like HIV and Influenza have already been found to infect and "hide from the immune system" in adipocytes. As fat cells can "infiltrate" organs in which immune cells are produced, this can have serious implications on weakening the immune system. Is this an explanation for why those with obesity have a higher risk of developing severe symptoms from COVID-19? What are some ways that we can improve individual's nutritional and lifestyle choices to prevent disease? What implications does this research have on low income individuals and those living in food deserts?
